Learning at Summerland

At Summerland, we believe nurturing the whole child means creating opportunities for students to explore their interests and take ownership of their learning. One way we do this in Primary is through opportunities such as Rich Learning and Peak Activities, where students can follow their curiosity and engage deeply with topics that spark their interest.

These experiences allow students to ask questions, investigate ideas, create, collaborate and problem-solve in meaningful ways. As their learning unfolds, students develop not only knowledge, but also the confidence and skills to think independently, teach themselves new things, and apply what they have learned to real-life situations.

By giving students space to explore their passions, we support them in growing as capable, curious learners who see learning as something exciting, purposeful and connected to the world around them.

Creating Opportunities

Nurturing holistic learning

In addition to academics, we also offer a wonderful variety of sport, art and drama, with programs that often grow from student interests. At Summerland, we believe a child’s spiritual, social and emotional development is just as important as their academic progress. That’s why we place such value on building a rich and connected College community, where students can collaborate, explore their gifts and engage in experiences that have real-world meaning. Our learning is designed to be collaborative, purposeful and deeply connected to the world around us.

A Strong Foundation

Strong literacy and numeracy skills are essential for making future learning accessible. In the Primary years, we place a strong emphasis on building these foundations through explicit phonics instruction and a concrete-to-abstract approach to numeracy, helping students develop confidence with language and fluency with numbers. At Summerland Christian College, literacy and numeracy development is intentionally embedded across all Key Learning Areas, ensuring students continue to strengthen these essential skills as they learn and grow.

Embracing Technology for the Future

As our teachers and leaders of learning design deeper learning and cultivate environments that best accommodate it, we will provide explicit instruction on what these key capacities or dispositions look like, along with opportunities for students to practise them, reflect on them, and measure their growth.

Co-Curricular Activities

Summerland Christian College offers a vast range of co-curricular activities that support the students’ formal education. Our students are provided opportunities in sport, music, the creative arts, living skills and Christian missions to enrich their schooling experience.
